A nearly perfect piece on the cloud: just like most talk of the cloud, it is vague, filled with baseless numbers spun as facts, and ultimately, meaningless. Stating that “cloud computing” is somewhere between 7.5 and 10% of total IT and service spending says almost nothing – virtualization is used in the cloud, do you count all VMware sales? Hard drives and computers are used in the cloud – do we count those? If you define cloud broadly and vaguely enough, can’t you include just about everything (which seems to be the trend)?
I particularly like how you end up with estimates of the sales by 2020 – why not estimate sales by 2030? 2100? The year 1,000,000? I bet that’d be a nice big number
