Storage and speed: The IT world can’t get enough of them. It’s fitting, then, that Brocade Communications Inc. and Nirvanix Inc. have partnered to deliver a bigger data pipe to Nirvanix’s cloud storage systems.
The Nirvanix claim to fame is the CloudComplete portfolio, a storage platform that scales into the petabytes. It offers managed public, hybrid and private cloud storage capabilities, designed for global scalability, and an enterprise-clad file system. Nirvanix needs to take its cloud platform to another level, giving users to access files “as one large global name space.” The company already provides these capabilities and seeks to expand them, especially as remote and mobile users tap into data anywhere on the globe.
To provide this enhancement, Nirvanix has turned to Brocade’s networking capabilities. Today, the Brocade ICX 6610 Ethernet switches, flanked by the NetIron CER 2000 routers, ADX application delivery switches and all-important Fibre Channel storage switches, provides the “backbone” for Nirvanix’s cloud storage systems, subsequently providing a foundation for an increasingly more scalable cloud storage infrastructure that will live up to Nirvanix’s promise of delivering “extreme levels of resilience” within hosted data.
Indeed, Nirvanix bills itself as being focused on data security, redundancy and speed, so this is a tight fit for the two companies. All Nirvanix partners will be automatically offering faster services for all existing customers, which should address remaining concerns about storage and networking in the cloud. More importantly, Nirvanix believes this data networking super-charge will allow for “hyper growth” in cloud storage and related solutions that leverage it.
Is there a bigger picture? We’re seeing an interesting convergence happening in the vendor space, which may allude to more important things happening with bigger vendors. Channelnomics’ contributor Larry Walsh has detailed how many larger vendors are looking to scoop up the “low-hanging fruit” of servers, virtualization and other specialized technologies to prevent lock-in with specific partnerships and to gain additional market share.
How does this relate to Brocade and Nirvanix? While large vendors fight to create their own ecosystems, smaller players in market are joining forces. Partnerships like these are likely the first signs of the much-predicted “nexus” of cloud consolidation. If vendors are willing to collaborate, this can create something greater than the sum of its parts (and partners), which may be helpful among smaller cloud solution providers.
