Citrix Systems Inc has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Zenprise, one of the major mobile device management players in the mobility space. Citrix will assimilating Zenprise’s MDM capabilities directly into its Citrix CloudGateway and Me@Work solutions, providing a much deeper level of control over the relationship between mobile devices and mobile data.

Confirmed in a press release from Citrix, this new relationship will also expand upon Citrix’s ability to provide a centralized console that gives IT admins and solution providers a more comprehensive approach to managing the security and compliance needs around mobile devices. Zenprise’s policy, compliance and DLP capabilities will become baked into Citrix’s management backbone, making this unified solution appealing for wide-scale enterprise BYOD deployments.

According to the release, this also acquisition fills a gap in the market as there is no “…single, integrated enterprise mobility product line from a trusted vendor that combines all the power of MDM, with the ability to manage mobile apps and data across any mix of user devices. [But this] is exactly what Citrix and Zenprise intend to deliver as a result of this acquisition.”

In a prepared statement, Sumit Dhawan, vice president of mobile solutions at Citrix, believed the acquisition would address the business challenges posed by BYOD and consumerization. For Citrix, Zenprise’s prowess in meshing security with mobility is the missing piece of a puzzle, needed to deliver “secure mobile apps, content and devices” to large workplace environments. Zenrprise CEO Amit Pandey called the acquisition ”a great complement” to Citrix’s existing portfolio.

This acquisition also continues Citrix’s mobile-first efforts, first made evident in its April acquisition of Podio. Podio provided Citrix with a complete mobile cloud productivity suite, including collaboration and social business tools, critical for any competitor in the mobile arena. In September, an updated version of Podio for the iPad was released  to expand upon the linkage between Podio and BYOD environments.

Now, combined with Zenprise’s new MDM capabilities and Citrix’s virtualization expertise, Citrix partners and providers can lead with — and deploy — complete end-to-end mobility solutions that addresses most organization’s needs. In addition, Citrix’s ability to deliver its Receiver virtualization client for Windows RT reinforces its dedication to the mobile scene. As mobile devices  are set to inundate the workplace by 2017, Citrix is well prepared for the future of computing.

The acquisition is set to close by Q1 2013, although no financial figures were disclosed about the acquisition. Citrix’s stock closed today at just under $60.
