Few people in the technology industry had a year like Russian cryptographer turned IT security entrepreneur Eugene Kaspersky. From being named one of Wired Magazine’s “15 Most Dangerous People in the World,” to elevating the concept of cyberwarfare to a household word with his bold and innovative suggestions for international regulatory efforts to thwart hackers, the charismatic Kaspersky uses both his notoriety and his status as a security thought leader as a bully pulpit to change the way the world thinks about securing its networks and technology assets.

His 15-year-old, $650-million-a-year company, Kaspersky Lab, now operates in 200 countries and his security products protect more than 300 million users worldwide. That position has afforded him a privileged window into the burgeoning world of cyber crime. What he’s seen has pushed him to call for a kind of “Internet Interpol”’ and more cooperation between international law enforcement and private agencies such as the International Telecommunication Union in pursuit of cyber crooks. He’s also called for so-called “Internet Passports,” a kind of online ID required for network access to stifle criminal behavior.

Throughout 2012, Kaspersky and his cadre of renowned security analysts have been at the forefront of identifying and corralling state-sponsored cyber malware such as Flame, Duqu and Stuxnet, And while he may be well known for lavish press junkets, extreme Alpine treks, and a love of fast, expensive automobiles, few in the IT industry question Kaspersky’s seriousness or expertise when it comes to dissecting the most significant threats to critical business technology here in the U.S. and around the world.

What elevates Eugene Kaspersky to the top of the Channelnomics 2012 Channel Influencer Awards, however, is more than just his security acumen and industry notoriety. Our 2012 Channelnomics Channel Influencers Awards recognize the contributions and impact of both vendor and solution provider executives and leaders who positively guide channel decisions and play a role in reseller buying habits. Winners were selected from hundreds of highly detailed and passionate nominations in 12 categories submitted by Channelnomics readership beginning in November and voted on by a blue ribbon panel of objective evaluators. Channelnomics’ editorial team served as the final arbiter.

Indeed, Kaspersky has been a formidable force in an important segment of the channel and continues to guide and influence important business strategies for his channel-friendly company’s growing legion of loyal resellers.

Kaspersky and his team have built a partner program for the 100-percent channel vendor that boasts some of the industry’s best reseller features, from unprecedented levels of deal control and support to some of the channel’s highest combined rewards and best margin protection. Kaspersky personally keeps the channel top of mind and is continually sounding out partners to better understand their challenges and find innovative ways to protect them and their customers.

Two months ago, for example, Kaspersky embarked on a North American tour where he met with hundreds of channel partners and their sales teams, a part of his tireless global efforts to stay at the top of the channel game and let partners share in his vision and passion for IT security. The fruits of these efforts have been new offerings such as the Kaspersky Security for Virtualization, an integrated part of the Kaspersky Security Center that is giving channel partners a trump card, offering customers a single, unified management platform for their virtual, physical and mobile environments.

In November 2012, Eugene was named one of Foreign Policy’s Top Global Thinkers, a list that celebrates the fearless leaders of the global debate over freedom of expression. In nominating their founder and CEO, Kaspersky officials told Channelnomics that this recognition “is a testament to the value he brings Kaspersky Lab’s partners.

“As one of the prevailing global authorities on cybersecurity, Eugene Kaspersky leads the company on threat research and product development, helping partners stay on the forefront of the threat landscape, which in turn allows them to protect their customers.”

For all of these reasons, it’s clear that Kaspersky’s visionary thinking and expertise on IT security positions his company to provide the most value to its own partners as well as to  influence the technology industry and the IT channel at large. We’re pleased to name Eugene Kaspersky our overall Channelnomics 2012 Channel Influencer of the Year.

    Поздравляю (Congratulations) to Eugene for this. He has been a bit of a contrarian in the industry. While other AV companies have gone public and had their prices pop in the wrong direction or who have postponed IPO’s, he chose to keep Kaspersky private a couple of years ago, for the added flexibility companies have when they don’t have to release quarterly earnings. Years ago, Kaspersky was the “secondary” AV product under the hood of a security appliance and was named in almost none of the documentation. Now his company is close to passing Trend Micro, whose AV SW was “primary” and was named. Good company, and their products are usually one of the top performers when tested by the usual test groups.
