Lyatiss Inc., growing in the software-defined data center space, has released a public beta of its CloudWeaver software for Amazon.com Inc.’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform. CloudWeaver is a specialized tool that enables application-defined networking, a software-based approach to cloud provisioning and resource management.
Much in the way software-defined networking (SDN) seeks to automate resource allocation for wide-scale cloud operations on the network level, application-defined networking (ADN) monitors application behavior and demands to automate resource allocation for cloud applications. But unlike SDN, ADN can orchestrate application flows, meaning sequential data from specific applications are optimized through virtual infrastructure, not just the network-based packets of zeros and ones. This allows applications to be adapted for specific networks using CloudWeaver APIs, part of Lyatiss’ secret sauce. This provides application acceleration that doesn’t limit an application’s ability to be migrated across cloud environments.
Lyatiss also sees the continuing growth of cloud-based applications, particularly Big Data and other real-time serivces, as the biggest culprits in creating next-gen bottlenecks. As such, Pascale Vicat-Blanc, CEO of Lyatiss, pushed back against traditional SDN: “Software defined networking (SDN) is not sufficient to address the predictability and performance issues encountered in current cloud applications, nor can it meet the need for infrastructure differentiation and software control. Instead, evolving to a complementary ADN solution will be required.”
Lyatiss officials insist CloudWeaver is unique in optimizing an application’s “virtual network pool of resources,” for greater cloud efficiency. And like many specialized tools, CloudWeaver offers a singular console that allows service providers to visualize network topology and usage stats to help alleviate network hangups.
In addition to a network map, CloudWeaver also provides the ability to quickly build out new network services on AWS, get detailed feedback on latency and potential limitations and analyze network configurations to ensure applications are running on the optimally provisioning hardware. Providers can also fix any failures through a “single click” remediation option, in addition to smart programing capabilities via XML.
Lyatiss is positioning the CloudWeaver platform for service providers demanding a holistic way to mange all infrastructure resources and apps, and are looking for a way to automate “minimum and maximum performance standards and enforce action when those standards are not met.” With the future of cloud service and cloud brokerage providers operating near infrastructure-less environments, tools like CloudWeaver will be critical to allowing a near-virtual company to expand its operations responsibly while limiting the amount of on-hand techs needed to manage cloud infrastructure. It will also help keep virtual resources more tangible, since visualizing network connections and application environments is a much more natural way to manage hosted platforms.
Today, CloudWeaver is aviable for public beta testing online, with official commercial versions hitting virtual shelves at the end of Q1 2013. No prices have been announced, but a pricing scale will be released when the commercial version of CloudWeaver is made available.
