Say this for Bob Muglia: He never does a job change in a small way.
The former Microsoft Corp. exec turned former Juniper exec resurfaced this week in his biggest role yet, as CEO of cloud data warehousing specialist Snowflake Computing. It’s Muglia’s third job in as many years; and the change comes, like the others, right out of left field.
“I joined Snowflake Computing because I love being a part of a world-class team that is using technology to solve hard business problems,” said Muglia. “The ultimate opportunity to gain business insight into modern applications is to build a platform service that was designed from the start to bring data warehousing, the cloud, and semi-structured data together. This is what we’re creating at Snowflake Computing – the database that re-imagines data warehousing as a cloud service.
“The Snowflake cloud service will unleash a new level of business insight for everyone in companies both large and small,” the new CEO continued. “Stay tuned; I promise you it will be worth waiting for.”
Muglia spent nearly 23 years at Microsoft, rising to the role of head of the $15 billion Server and Tools Business unit before being displaced in a coup that saw him replaced by a little-know Redmond insider named Satya Nadella. And we all know how that turned out.
While Nadella got busy on the career track that would ultimately see him succeed CEO Steve Ballmer at Microsoft, Muglia jumped to Juniper, where he spent two years as vice president of the Software Solutions Division reporting to Juniper CEO Kevin Johnson, another former Microsoftie.
By December 2013, however, the Johnson era was over, and Muglia abruptly quit Juniper one month before new CEO Shaygan Kheradpir took over the networking vendor.
Muglia, a Seattle native, will now take his talents to San Mateo, where he says he expects the ongoing cloud transformation in enterprise computing to smile on Snowflake’s fortunes.
“We’ve seen the emergence of business intelligence and data warehousing,” Muglia said. “These tools have provided unprecedented insight into business, enabling data-driven decision-making. More recently, the dual trends of mobility and the cloud are enabling entirely new types of solutions.
“Cloud services generate vast repositories of data that can reveal usage patterns and customer preference far beyond what was possible before. The need to gain insight into this data is more important than ever.”
