VMware unveils VMware vSphere with Operations Management and VMware vSphere Data Protection Advanced, bringing a more cohesive and efficient management and backup solution to mid-sized virtualization environments — part of VMware’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its solution portfolio.

EMC launches EMC Smarts 9.1, an update to its data center management platform, bringing deeper visibility into network and storage operations. As cloud operations ramp up, from SaaS to PaaS, vendors are gearing up their management offerings so providers can expand their own revenue opportunities.

VMware’s much-rumored spin-off is announced as a “virtual organization,” dubbed the Pivotal Initiative. Paul Martiz, former VMware CEO and current EMC CSO, will now head up the virtual organization as VMware and EMC seek to realign their efforts and create a focused developmental outlet for the future of cloud technology.

The rumors about VMware spinning off Cloud Foundry, GemStone and SpringSource into an EMC-based subsidiary are back. If former VMware CEO Paul Martiz heads up the hypothetical organization, it may put VMware and EMC in a much stronger position to compete with rivals in the cloud and virtualization space.

Riverbed integrates VMware’s vSphere platform into its Steelhead EX appliance, delivering a centrally manageable platform that can help deliver streamline virtualization and networking services, reliably connecting branch offices and consolidating edge data centers.

Amid all the hoopla and rah-rah in San Francisco later this month, here are a few things that will remain unaddressed, but should be of interest to VMware’s partners and customers.
