Newly established role gives industry veteran command of worldwide distribution, logistics, and integration service strategies
Synnex Corp. kicked off the new year with a significant leadership coup, luring exec Michael Urban from rival Tech Data to lead worldwide technology solutions distribution at the Freemont, Calif.-based disty.
The Lowdown: Michael Urban comes to Synnex from Tech Data on Feb. 1 to take the newly created position of President of Worldwide Technology Solutions Distribution. He will report to Synnex President and CEO Dennis Polk and is expected to bring a more consistent, global perspective to the company’s distribution, logistics, and integration service operations, company officials said.
The Details: In a letter to vendors and partners, Polk praised Urban’s partner-focused leadership style and indicated that much of the distributor’s current leadership team would remain unchanged. North America Distribution President Peter Larocque, EVP for Latin America Otavio Lazarini Barbosa, and CEO of Synnex Japan T.J. Trojan are expected to remain in their current roles and will report to Urban when he comes onboard next month.
Background: A 25-year tech-industry veteran, Urban spent the past six years at Clearwater, Fla.-based Tech Data, serving most recently as corporate SVP for strategy, transformation, and global vendor management. He began his tenure at Tech Data in 2012 as SVP of broadline, consumer electronic, services, and procurement in the company’s Barcelona offices. He is the former CEO of Swiss VOIP provider Carpo Holding AG and served more than 13 years as CEO and chairman of German IT distributor Actebis Holding GmbH (now called ALSO Holding AG).
The Buzz: “Michael brings a wealth of leadership and operational experience to this new role,” said Polk. “Our partners and the execution of our ongoing distribution business strategic initiatives will benefit from the consolidation of our global technology solutions distribution business under one leader.
“With his substantial industry experience, along with his entrepreneurial spirit, Michael will make a great addition to our management team,” Polk added.
“I am very excited to be joining the Synnex team,” said Urban. “The IT channel is in constant transition, and I believe Synnex is positioned well to capitalize on the ever-changing and dynamic IT distribution environment. I look forward to partnering with the leadership team on this journey.”
