New tools deliver real-time data replication, VM failover, recovery from object stores
Cloud Data Management start-up JetStream Software this week introduced new tools for cloud-based disaster recovery services to help CSPs and MSPs deliver real-time replication and lightning fast recovery for VMware environments in an as-a-service model.
The Lowdown: The new JetStream DR joins the vendor’s JetStream Accelerate and JetStream Migrate as part of its Cross-Cloud Data Management platform. JetStream DR enables real-time replication to a ready failover environment for immediate recovery and resumed operations, officials said.
The Details: Unlike traditional backup offerings that rely on intermittent snapshots, JetStream DR replicates data as it’s written to local storage through VMware IO filters for near-zero recovery point objective (RPO) and near-zero recovery time objective (RTO).
JetStream DR runs within VMware vSphere to protect VMs on a variety of infrastructures, including SAN, NAS, vSAN, HCI, and others. The recovery environment can be any VMware-compatible infrastructure, regardless of architecture.
JetStream DR’s near-synchronous data replication can also be directed to an S3-compatible object store — AWS S3 and solutions from vendors including Cloudian, MinIO, and others — for continuous data protection.
Background: JetStream DR is currently in production deployment with select partners and customers. All JetStream products are distributed via technology resellers, cloud service providers, and managed service providers.
The Buzz: “In their quest for a higher level of data protection and business continuity, management often present their IT organizations with conflicting mandates, such as lower RPO and RTO, reduced costs, and increased use of public cloud,” said Tom Critser, CEO and co-founder of JetStream. “This dilemma is actually due to the technology that’s currently available. With JetStream, organizations can achieve better metrics in their public cloud DR services, while taking advantage of object storage and thin-provisioned, on-demand failover resources for economic advantage.”
“We’re seeing a tectonic shift in the space that used to be called ‘backup and recovery,’” explained Rich Petersen, president and co-founder of JetStream. “The mission of this technology has shifted from backups that ‘protect the data’ to business continuity solutions that ‘protect the business.’ Also, the technology partner deploying and managing these solutions has shifted from the enterprise end user to the cloud service provider.”
