Add-on service promises to gauge risk levels of hundreds of millions of Web domains to ease burden on admins, protect users
Mobile productivity solutions vendor NetMotion Software today rolled out a new subscription service that promises to identify risk profiles and categories for hundreds of millions of Web domains that might be visited by end users with networked devices.
The Lowdown: The new NetMotion Reputation service aims to help administrators better defend against threats, enforce acceptable use policies, and improve connectivity and network performance, all without impeding user experience. Reputation should give IT teams and service providers better visibility into user behavior and a better handle on access to risky or inappropriate cloud applications and Websites.
The Details: NetMotion Reputation categorizes Websites by site type, giving admins visibility into potential violations of acceptable use policies, such as adult content or unlicensed file-sharing, and steering end users clear of sites known for hosting malware, crypto-jacking scripts, phishing campaigns, or other dangerous content. The tool allows for granular customization in determining what’s deemed inappropriate based on a user’s specific policies and use cases.
Admins can also block access if an end user clicks on a malicious link in an SMS or mobile application even when on cellular or public Wi-Fi connections.
The Buzz: “The Reputation service is all about giving organizations new intelligence into the domains their remote workers are accessing,” said John Knopf, vice president of products at NetMotion. “With that information, they can implement powerful and precise mitigation policies that block or allow access by user, application, domain, network, or time of day. IT departments can protect users without hampering their experience or interfering with their daily tasks.”
