Distributor’s cloud division is helping solution providers transition customers to the Microsoft Azure infrastructure service
The days of Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server are winding down, and Ingram Micro Cloud – the distributor’s cloud division – is giving solution providers added support to ease and accelerate customers’ transition from the aging operating systems to the Microsoft Azure infrastructure service.
The Lowdown: For more than a decade, SQL Server and Windows Server 2008 served as the mainstay of organizations’ data center operating systems. Microsoft will end support for the SQL Server database platform at the end of July. Support for Windows Server 2008, one of the most widely used server operating systems, will cease at the end of 2019. Businesses can still use the two systems after that time, but they won’t have access to security patches or functional updates.
The Details: Ingram Micro Cloud is pushing the resources and support offered through its Azure Accelerate program to help solution providers access the resources they need to get their customers from the aging server systems to Microsoft’s cloud. The Azure Accelerate program gives Ingram Micro solution providers the training, resources, and support to streamline and expedite migration from on-premises systems to the cloud.
The Impact: The need for refreshing or migrating Windows Server 2008 is enormous. According to IT Candor, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 commands 71% of the on-premises server market. According to IDC, on-premises servers still make up half of the overall server market, with the other half divided between public and private cloud infrastructure. As support ends for Windows Server 2008 and SQL server, businesses will likely adopt public and hybrid cloud infrastructure.
The Buzz: “Companies who use Microsoft’s SQL Server and Server 2008 are facing the unavoidable July 9 deadline, and are now working against the clock to guarantee data and infrastructure vulnerability does not become an issue,” said Duncan Robinson, global director of Microsoft Alliance at Ingram Micro. “This critical juncture provides a low-friction window of opportunity for our partners to modernize and future-proof their clients’ businesses by migrating them to Azure. Our Azure Accelerate program and support offerings ensure this happens swiftly, effortlessly, and right on time. We’re here for our customers every step of the way, no matter how many or few steps it takes.”
