Distributor combines products of IoT specialist and Microsoft Azure to create analytics system that reduces unplanned shutdowns
Arrow Electronics is taking aim at optimizing IoT-driven manufacturing by combining the monitoring capabilities of ADLINK’s industrial controls and Microsoft’s Azure IoT Central, which – combined – will reduce the frequency and duration of unplanned factory and machinery downtime.
The Lowdown: Industry 4.0 – the digitalization and automation of durable goods manufacturing – is vulnerable to the same workflow and productivity stoppages of legacy machinery and assembly lines. Automated equipment can unexpectedly break, shutting down entire production systems and resulting in lost productivity, recovery, and market costs. The Arrow-led industrial IoT solution aims to reduce IoT manufacturing downtime by monitoring equipment for anomalous activity that could indicate probable to imminent failure.
The Details: Arrow leveraged ADLINK’s Edge IoT Solution for Machine Condition Monitoring – specifically, the MCM-100 – for collecting data for vibration analysis on rotation machinery. The data is fed and controlled by the Microsoft Azure IoT Central cloud platform, which provides computational capacity and operational scalability.
The Impact: Industrial IoT (IIoT) is a massive market opportunity. According to IDC, discrete manufacturers will spend $119 billion and process manufacturers will spend $78 billion on IoT systems, controls, and support in 2019. Arrow is taking aim at reducing operating costs and losses due to systems disruptions. The potential ROI for solution providers that can deliver systems such as the Arrow-ADLINK-Microsoft combination could find receptive and recurring revenue from manufacturer customers.
The Buzz: “Manufacturing companies need to get to proof of value in a fast, safe, and cost-effective way,” said Ashish Parikh, vice president of IoT platforms and solutions at Arrow. “With the help of Microsoft’s platform, Arrow was able to provide additional services and resources to complement and connect ADLINK’s industrial Edge IoT solution so customers can reliably analyze and visualize real-time event data in the Azure Cloud.”
