Start-up’s SaaS offering is built on AWS
Clumio, which launched out of stealth on Tuesday, has spent the past two years building its eponymous Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering on Amazon Web Services (AWS), thanks in large part to $51 million raised through two rounds of funding from the likes of Sutter Hill Ventures and Index Ventures.
The Lowdown: The company, which was co-founded by entrepreneur and Clumio CEO Poojan Kumar, wants to move enterprise data protection away from complex hardware and software environments and put it into the cloud.
The Details: Clumio is a Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) offering that enterprises can leverage to consolidate the protection of their data centers and remote sites without having to size, configure, manage, or buy hardware or software. Instead, Clumio protects workloads like VMware Cloud on AWS and native AWS services within minutes of setup. It automatically scales resources to meet requirements, encrypts backups in transit and at rest, and creates a single policy for virtual machines (VMs) on premises and in the cloud. Enterprises pay for the service based on the number of VMs protected.
Organizations are increasingly moving their workloads into the cloud and taking advantage of SaaS, a market that IDC analysts say will grow from about $100 billion last year to more than $185 billion by 2022. The market for data protection-as-a-service will jump to more than $10 billion by 2022, they said.
Background: This is Kumar’s second start-up. He also founded storage backup company PernixData, which was bought by cloud software vendor Nutanix in 2016. He created the Oracle Exadata database system as well. Also launching Clumio are Woon Ho Jung and Kaustubh Patil, who come with VMware and Nutanix experience.
The Buzz: “Enterprise workloads are being ‘SaaS-ified’ because IT can no longer afford the time, complexity, and expense of building and managing heavy on-prem hardware and software solutions if they are to successfully deliver against their digital transformation initiatives,” Kumar said. “Unlike legacy backup vendors, Clumio SaaS is born in the cloud. We have and can leverage the most secure and innovative cloud services available within our service to ensure that we can meet customer requirements for backup, regardless of where the data is.”
“The Clumio Backup-as-a-Service offering removes infrastructure complexity from day-to-day operations by providing cloud-native backup and an easy-to-use management interface for our workloads,” said Marcus Johnston, Chief Security Officer at Infogix.
