Cloud-based DaaS solution aimed at organizations of all sizes
Citrix Systems on Monday launched a cloud-hosted desktop offering that enables organizations of any size to provision Windows applications and desktops via the cloud to any device whenever they want.
The Lowdown: The Citrix Managed Desktops service leverages Microsoft’s Azure public cloud services to give enterprises and other companies an easy and quick way to deliver virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) via the cloud to their employees, who increasingly want the ability to work remotely at any time and on any device.
The Details: Through the Citrix Managed Desktops offering, organizations enable both internal and outside users, such as contract workers, to securely access resources and can scale their cloud-hosted VDI environments as needed to meet fluctuating business demands, such as when new users are added following an acquisition or merger.
Customers also can integrate the desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) offering with on-premises corporate resources, such as Active Directory, and can ensure that the performance of the applications and desktops are optimized by deploying and managing them in multiple regions, closest to the end users. Citrix’s VDI offering is available now through flexible monthly or term pricing plans.
The Impact: Citrix partners will play a key role in deploying DaaS for end users. In addition, the cloud-hosted offering will enable partners to build customized services on top of it, allowing the channel to deliver added value that spans various verticals.
Background: Citrix is no stranger to the hosted apps and desktop market. The company already offers Citrix Virtual Apps, an application virtualization solution designed to give users easy access to virtual applications and server-based desktops on any device. Citrix’s Virtual Apps and Desktops includes all that functionality, as well as the option of deploying a VDI solution via the cloud or a traditional software offering. The vendor’s partnership with Microsoft dates back more than 25 years.
The Buzz: “Work today isn’t confined to physical offices or traditional devices. It happens around the clock and globe on everything from PCs and laptops to phones, tablets, and even watches,” said Carisa Stringer, senior director of product marketing at Citrix’s Desktop and Applications Group. “With Citrix Managed Desktops, organizations can quickly and easily provide employees with access to their individual desktops and all the applications and corporate resources they need to do their jobs and perform at their best.”
“As a small organization with 30 employees, it’s critical to be able to do more with less,” Nocontract.com CEO Michael Donaldson said. “Citrix Managed Desktops provides an easy, efficient, and cost-effective way for us to provision and manage the Windows app our employees need to do their best work and move our business forward.”
“Citrix Managed Desktops is a simple, scalable, and manageable solution that just works by leveraging the robustness of Microsoft Azure, and we’re excited to use it to build [DaaS] offerings with ease at a cost-per-desktop that’s affordable for our clients,” said Pete Downing, CMO and CTO at XenTegra, Citrix’s Partner of the Year.
