Enhancements touch on Kubernetes, containers, and data management
Cloud provider Rackspace is enhancing its hybrid cloud portfolio with new capabilities that touch on containers and Kubernetes, management, and application and data management.
The Lowdown: The new services add to the broad portfolio Rackspace offers for hybrid cloud deployment and management and are aimed at helping enterprises take advantage of the scalability and flexibility of the public cloud.
The Details: The new offerings include:
Managed VMware Cloud on AWS: Enterprises can now use VMware’s HCX cloud migration service as well as managed guest OS service to more easily move workloads between VMware-based private clouds and VMware Cloud on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Rackspace will add managed external storage capabilities later.
Kubernetes and container services: Professional and managed services will help organizations leverage container architectures for their cloud efforts, a key tool for modernizing applications and moving workloads to the cloud.
Cloud-native support: With Cloud Reliability Engineering Service Block, Rackspace infrastructure engineers will work with customers’ in-house IT teams to support internal infrastructure projects and adopt cloud-native capabilities.
Expanded Rackspace Managed Security (RMS) Service Blocks: Rackspace is adding services around proactive detection and response, as well as compliance and assistance, to organizations on VMware private clouds. Also, RMS Service Blocks for Managed Public Cloud users are expanding to support native security tools on public clouds, starting with AWS.
Integration and API management assessment: Rackspace will evaluate application and data integration across an entire organization, including hybrid IT deployments.
The Impact: Enterprise adoption of hybrid cloud strategies will only grow, and the demand for services around these complex environments will increase as well. According to Forrester analysts, 74% of enterprises describe their cloud strategy as hybrid.
The Buzz: “We’re in the midst of a significant hybrid cloud movement with over $1 trillion of spend allocated toward cloud and associated IT services,” said Vikas Gurugunti, executive vice president and general manager of solutions and services at Rackspace. “Our new set of advanced hybrid cloud services, backed by our industry-leading service blocks framework, provide customers the expertise necessary to help navigate through their hybrid cloud journeys, from determining their cloud objectives through transforming and securing their application environments using containers and cloud-native technologies.”
“We want to be a global leader, not just in terms of our services, but also in terms of our technology,” said Ron McIntyre, CTO of Delmar International, a Rackspace customer. “We have to make a shift away from legacy systems and more toward global platforms. Rackspace has this omni-platform footprint that allowed us to go to them with every single one of our projects and ask, ‘How can you help us?’ With the help of Rackspace, and especially the applications team, we were able to come up with a hybrid technology stack that is usable and sustainable, no matter where we need to deploy it.”
