Partnership aims to grow software giant’s cloud presence around the world
Equinix, a co-location and data center interconnection specialist, is using its Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric (ECX Fabric) to help Oracle expand the reach of its cloud infrastructure across five continents.
The Lowdown: The extended partnership means that customers in Sao Paulo, Sydney, Tokyo, Toronto, and Zurich now have private and secure connectivity to Oracle Cloud on Platform Equinix, an environment of interconnected data centers and ecosystems that vendors and companies around the world can leverage.
The Details: The ECX Fabric is Equinix’s on-demand, software-defined networking (SDN)-enabled interconnection service that dynamically links infrastructures on Platform Equinix via a software-defined interconnection. For Oracle Cloud customers, Platform Equinix ensures secure access to Oracle applications. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect – which gives customers a dedicated connection between their data centers and Oracle Cloud – via ECX Fabric gives enterprises a private connection for migrating and running applications and data workloads in Oracle Cloud on Platform Equinix.
The expanded collaboration also includes enabling Oracle Cloud users in the Phoenix area to connect to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect from Equinix’s International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in Los Angeles through ECX Fabric.
The Impact: The announcement that the long-term partnership between Oracle and Equinix would be expanded came this week at the Oracle OpenWorld show. Oracle FastConnect currently is deployed in six Equinix IBX data centers in the United States, Europe, and Australia, and Equinix offers ECX Fabric interconnections to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect in 32 metropolitan areas in the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
Background: The expanded partnership was one of a number of announced collaborations aimed at growing the reach of the company’s cloud environment. Oracle was famously late to the cloud game and is now playing catch-up with larger players like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, and IBM Cloud.
The Buzz: “Companies today are faced with continuously changing business demands that require a new level of speed, reliability, and security,” said Vinay Kumar, vice president of product management for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. “With Oracle Cloud Infrastructure using FastConnect in Equinix IBX data centers, customers can provision the private connections they need today to scale with these growing demands. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect offers a simple port-based pricing model, with no additional egress or ingress bandwidth charges, providing amazing value to data-intensive workloads.”
“As companies around the world are prioritizing digital transformation as a way to gain a competitive advantage, we’re seeing increased customer demand to migrate Oracle workloads to Oracle Cloud,” said Robert Blackburn, global managing director of the Oracle Strategic Alliance at Equinix. “The reality is that companies that are adopting digital transformation are thriving, and those that are not are being left behind. With this direct access, our mutual customers can create a high-speed, low-latency connection that allows them to fully realize the benefits of their Oracle deployment “
“As a company with a 100-year track record as an innovator in industrial silica products and solutions, our customers have high expectations of us,” said Mohammed Shareef, director of IT applications and enterprise architecture at U.S. Silica, an Oracle Cloud customer. “When we made the critical decision to upgrade our ERP and migrate it to the cloud, we knew we needed the right partners in place to succeed. With Oracle Cloud Infrastructure FastConnect through ECX Fabric, we were able to bring applications and services closer to our users, implement a robust DR solution, increase agility, and enhance security and reliability.”
