The latest – and fifth generation of – cellular mobile communications. Succeeding 4G (LTE), 3G (UMTS), and 2G (GSM), 5G offers the promise of very high data rates (up to 20 gigabits per second), reduced costs and latency, energy savings, and unprecedented device connectivity. First-phase 5G specifications are slated for completion by March 2019; the second phase should be completed by March 2020. It’s believed that 5G, in bringing widespread LAN-like speed and latency to mobile networks, will make cloud computing even more compelling to businesses of every size and stripe.
